What is Dry Needling?
Dry needling is a therapeutic procedure used to relax muscle tissue, reduce pain and dysfunction, improve mobility and accelerate tissue regeneration. It is performed with thin sterile needles that lead to a sore part of the muscle, The so-called trigger point.
When the needle reaches the ‘trigger point’, it can cause a short muscle twitch, known as "twitch". This is a normal muscular reaction when the needle reaches its painful part, which causes a short muscle spasm, followed by relaxation. In Dry Needling, this twitch effect is often desirable but may not always be present. Some muscles are more prone to this reaction, and some are less prone to this reaction.
Is Dry Needling painful?
Of course, there is no universal answer to this question.
Each person is unique, just like their pain threshold. We can say that the perception of pain in Dry Needling depends on the individual threshold of pain, on the level of inflammation and pain of the muscle itself and on the possible repulsion towards the needles. Since the needles are extremely thin (diameter 0.15-0.35 mm) for most people this does not represent an unpleasant experience. The most common feedback is that only the moment of entry of the needle itself into the trigger point is slightly unpleasant, but it is short and is followed by relief.
Many agree that a short discomfort when entering the needle is negligible compared to the long-lasting relief it brings. If you are still afraid of needles, you may be comforted by the fact that many claim that the feeling of needles is more of a surprise than pain.
What to expect after therapy?
When you leave your treatment, it is possible to feel a slight inflammation of the treated area immediately or within a few hours. This feeling can be compared to muscle inflammation after exercise. Such a reaction is completely normal and is a natural process of tissue regeneration. That's why it's It is recommended that you avoid heavy physical exertion and exercise (except for light stretching), try to relax and drink more fluids that day and the day after the treatment.
Is Dry Needling the same as acupuncture?
Dry Needling is not the same as acupuncture. Although the needles used in Dry Needling and acupuncture are the same, the method of application and philosophy differ significantly.
Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medical practice dating back several millennia. It is based on the belief that an energy called “Qi” flows through the body and travels through the meridians. The needles are placed at specific points along these meridians, and they can be distant from where the pain is felt. It is aimed at restoring energy balance and relieving symptoms.
Dry Needling is a modern technique that has developed from Western medicine. It focuses on anatomy and muscle physiology. The needles are introduced directly into sore muscle points, the so-called “trigger points”. The procedure is aimed at muscle problems and myofascial pain.
